We are a not-for-profit organisation that works autonomously from other YMCAs. We serve young people, their families and the communities of Torbay and the South Hams and pride ourselves on offering excellent service to all. Our various programmes and events help create a sustainable future for our charity. We reinvest in our facilities and our staff to continue developing what it is that we can offer.
A growing success
Our new nursery has been open for nine months now & we’re really happy with the growth that we’ve seen. Our uptake has continued and we’re looking forward to welcoming news faces at the start of September as well as welcoming back some familiar faces. The children will continue to have new friends, settling-in is easier because we’re still quiet & we are able to employ new staff who will be able to support the existing team; we took on an apprentice just before the Summer holidays and with numbers developing as they are we may shortly be employing another.
Over time we have been able to experiment with the different spaces, adapting layouts & resources to meet the needs of the children; this has kept the nursery feeling fresh & exciting. Our garden with a large sandpit, mud kitchen, grassy area with slopes & more offers much to play with.
The YMCA South Devon has been in its’ existing location since 1969 when it was formally opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother on the 8th May.
In the years leading up to this momentous occasion we were awarded £31,000 (then a huge sum) and secured an additional £3000 to help cover costs of a new building and equipment which would replace tired and dilapidated structures once used in Paignton. A multi-purpose centre considered “attractive enough to compete with all the up-to-date mediums of youthful entertainment” was assembled just off from the recently built Dartmouth Road.
